Sarah Jane Morris – The Sisterhood 2

Back in 2024, Sarah Jane Morris released her album The Sisterhood on International Women’s Day, celebrating ten inspirational female singers from Bessie Smith to Jonie Mitchell. This new collection is the second volume of work, a follow up with nine new tracks honouring some of the very best female singer-songwriters.

Sarah Jane Morris is perhaps best known for her work with The Communards, her vocals featuring on hits like Don’t Leave Me This Way. Morris has also released fifteen solo albums across a wide variety of genres including jazz, blues and even opera. She has a wide vocal range and uses it  to good effect on this collection of songs.

The opening seven minute Longing To Be Free is an anthemic salute to the life and works of feminist icon Peggy Seegar. Another standout is The Edge Is Where The Magic Is Found, with a jazzy feel for Amy Winehouse. The track nicely encompasses the eloquence of her songwriting and the eventual tragedy of her death. Sweet Mamma Raitt, for Bonnie, and Crazy Angel, for Patti Smith are also very good.

The Sisterhood 2 is another fine tribute to some of the greatest female voices, and showcases Morris’ vocal range and control very well. The music is varied and compelling, giving a very good collection of tracks. Morris’ excellent vocals are ably backed by the work of guitarist Tony Remy throughout.
