5 Stars. That’s all that needs saying when it comes to the direction. Acting, production work, story, anything you can think of. Raiders was, is, and probably forever shall be a five star movie. On further analysis of the plot you can see just how cleverly they have kept the pace of this globe-trotting adventure up. It never sinks into melodrama, and even in the quieter moments you get information about characters, or some big laughs.
Raiders is the ultimate Hollywood blockbuster done well. Chris Nolan may have taken up that mantle recently with his dedication, but Spielberg’s took the look of classic golden era cinema and turned it into some very exciting indeed back in his prime.
Some may argue that the Berg never dropped out of his prime for a long time – but to compare Raiders to Jurassic Park is no game at all. While the former has some very strong merits, in a fist fight that dinosaur will soon find its tail between its legs and back on the path to extinction.
Harrison Ford carries his rugged charm (and remember that Indiana Jones really was a bit of an anti-hero for his day (let’s not forget after finding Marion tied up in a Nazi tent that he thinks it best to leave her there for the greater good); and yet we confide our trust in him throughout, as we are sure he will come out on top with the best of intentions well served.
So with all this ranting and raving going on in favour of such a well shot and beautifully portrayed movie, why have we tagged it with 4 stars?
Well this is the IMAX release we are reviewing and to be blunt – It aint great. Not only is it not great – it’s really, REALLY blurry! We suspect the recent Jaws Blu-ray didn’t look this poor on the big screen – and we are praying the eventual Blu-ray release of this looks better on the smaller home-screen. But there are many moments of blur that have us worried. When October 8 swings round we will find out!
In the meantime Raiders of the Lost Ark is on at the IMAX for just one week from Friday 21st September.
