At least two of the Filmwerk team stayed up all night to watch the Oscars unfold… Despite a truly excruciating and terrible pre-show of the red carpet (which seemed more interested in various ugly women’s opinions than actually showing us any stars) the show got underway.
Seth MacFarlane (who needs to learn not to clap while he is presenting) started on a bit of a rocky path, but was saved by William Shatner. Our host then went on to find his strengths not just in the jokes but also in his song and dance capabilities. As usual though as the show went on we saw less and less of our host, but he ad-libs throughout were usually pretty good. A particular highlight involved a Smokey and the Bandit moment with nominee Sally field.
The same could not be said of pretty much any presenter as comedy seemed forced and often irritable (yes you Melissa McCarthy and Paul Rudd). But Daniel Day Lewis probably gave the best speech for his win for Lincoln, and Ben Affleck for most deserving of an Award at the end of night for Argo. Lucky undeserving bastard went to Tarantino for his flabby Django unchained script.
The evening ended up at around 3 ½ hours for the awards – not aided by the overabundance of musical numbers: Bizarrely only celebrating the last 10 years of musical?
There was also a half-hearted effort to celebrate Bond turning 50. Shirley Bassey showed up to sing Goldfinger, which she gamely braved. Adele sang and then won for Skyfall. But not one James Bond showed up – despite the initial idea to have them all (or most of) on stage. A real let down.
