Blood Simple: Directors Cut DVD Review

Hell, its been a long time coming, but April 15th marks the UK DVD premiere by Studio Canal of the Coen brothers first feature film, Blood Simple, in Director’s cut. For a debut, you can’t get much better than this stylish and witty film noir about a double-cross and murder in a small town. The small ensemble cast of world class character actors ( including of course, a shockingly young looking Frances McDormand acting her socks off) are mesmerising and the film is also notable for being the first major feature by renowned cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld.

What seems like a simple matter of a bar owner investigating his wife’s possible infidelity with one of his staff turns into a roller coaster of lies, cheating, murder and panic including one of the best and most surprising plot twists in recent years. No one is what they seem and as events spiral down to the unpredictable conclusion the viewer is left gasping from the ride. This has always been one of my most favourite Coen brothers films. Yes, its raw, yes, it is damn clear it was made in the early 80’s and yes, it could STILL do with some tighter editing but my god, is it GOOD.

The director’s cut is three minutes shorter than the original 1985 theatrical release (coming in at 92 minutes) and the cuts have been very well considered, making for a smoother, pacier movie. The Coens have reduced the running time with tighter editing, shortening some shots and removing others altogether. There has also been changes to the music which are beneficial. I much preferred the tighter movie and the few shots added (notably in the burial scene) add real depth to the shock of the scenes. They have also removed one line spoken by Visser, the private eye, which normally gives an indication of the direction things may follow so I am really pleased this is no longer present.

If you have missed this movie so far then you really must watch it soon, and watch this version first. If you have seen it a million times already and love it, you are going to love this even more I promise. An added bonus is the inclusion of the trailer which is hilarious! Love it.
