If you’re anything like us, you’ll agree there’s nothing better than a night of live music with your mates. But it’s not always that easy, is it? There’s the getting ready, making sure you’ve eaten, making sure there’s time for a few pre-drinks – and the act of arriving on time as well.
Let’s not even go there when it comes to the stress of doing all of that on a weekday. But why make it hard for yourself? We’ve put together a quick guide so you can focus on the important things – like the music.
Be prepared
Know you’re going to a gig next Tuesday? Start planning now. It may not be “cool”, but you probably have actual things you need to do in the week these days: “bunking off” like you did when you were 17 just isn’t an option anymore.
Tell your boss you’ll need to leave early and offer to come in a bit earlier that day if need be. You’ll be glad of it if it means you can get out the door and home with time to change before having to leave again.
Lay out the clothes you want to wear, too, you don’t want to be going in full work get-up! And go as light as possible on the jackets – unless it’s really cold out, in which case look out some change for the cloakroom.
Make sure you eat
It’s probably not super rock’n’roll, but ensuring you’ve had a good meal is imperative to making sure things go smoothly on the night. Imagine your mates having a good laugh while all you can think about is your rumbling stomach. And no one likes a “hangry” mosher.
Have a few pals round beforehand and order in a takeaway. Sites like Deliveroo can sort you out, as you can choose from different types of food and find something to suit everybody. Anyway, you just need something to tide you over until you wind up in the kebab house at the end of the night.
Have a few pre-drinks
Supporting venues is important when it comes to buying drinks, but let’s face it – nobody’s made of money. With prices as they are at gigs these days, it makes sense to have a couple of rounds before you go. With your friends at your place, everyone can pitch in. Share a bottle or split a crate.
Alternatively, you can scope out the local pubs close to the venue – so you’re not too far from the show itself if you get a bit carried away!
Sort out your transport
Planning to get the bus or the train? Have you actually checked they’re running? There’s nothing worse than a public transport fail to ruin an otherwise amazing night.
Taxis can be a good shout if you’re not too far from where you need to be. Remind your friends to bring cash in advance to stop any dodgy mates not paying their share! Or, if someone’s offering to take you, make sure there’s no drinking and driving.
And that’s it: the so-called “hard part” is done. Now all that’s left to do is have some fun.
