Playlist: SEGO – Best of the LA Underground Scene
LA-based duo Sego release their debut album ‘Once Was Lost Now Just Hanging Around’ via Raygun Music in the UK on May 6th, 2016 so we caught up with them to get a special playlist of the best in LA underground music right now, check it out:
Swimm: “Beverly Hells”
We’ve known Swimm for years. They actually played the first warehouse party we threw back in 2010. They now live in the warehouse with us which we call “The Cube”. This track was recorded at The Cube. It is a great commentary of the disillusion and confusion one feels by moving to LA in pursuit of musical dreams. (Thomas)
Gardens & Villa: “Paradise”
With as much notoriety and success these guys have had I feel like they are still pretty underground, and in a very good way. They constantly push their envelope and consistently release great music. They keep enough weirdness in their back pocket to keep their albums unpredictable yet satisfyingly catchy. A staple for long drives in between shows. (Thomas)
Goldensuns: “I Feel This Place”
LA via Utah as well. Great song, great feel…we share a common interest in Tears For Fears and Psychedelic Furs. These boys have been making waves around town since their arrival and will continue to do so with a batch of new tunes slated to be released soon. (Thomas)
Fidlar: “Cheap Beer”
In a dingy warehouse in the industrial district of south east downtown Los Angeles, I happened to catch wind of a secret Fidlar show the night of their record release. Wall to wall with sweaty kids. On the down beat of their first song (Cheap Beer), a guy had climbed up an electrical pipe on the wall and jumped into the center of the crowd which promptly erupted into a nonstop mosh pit for the rest of the night (except for the crowd surfing pizza box that made it from the back of the venue to the stage). Francisco The Man: “Broken Arrows”
After seeing them for my first time I remember feeling like I was watching an “actual” band. You see a lot of good music and good bands in LA but these guys have always stood out as being not only a “band” but a great band. (Thomas)
Gentle Pony: “The Special Song”
You don’t see too many 2-piece bands these days that can play louder than every other band on the bill, but here is an exception. Heavy, trippy, & chump-free (Thomas)
The Moth & The Flame: “Sorry”
Fellow Provo to Los Angeles transplants. Always very methodical and meticulous in their production and song writing decisions. I’ve definitely learned a lot from these fellas in terms of restraint and focus on details. I also was with them when we got strip searched at the border crossing from Sweden into Norway. No jail time. (Spencer)
Gothic Tropic: “Kill Lloyd Opus”
At our warehouse outside of downtown, we’ve oft had parties and concerts. While trying to watch a movie during one of these parties of mostly mediocre music, I heard this song vibrating through the walls. I immediately jumped up and ran back and watched the rest of their set. (Spencer)
Andy Clockwise: “Everybody’s In A Band”
Days after arriving in Los Angeles, Thomas and I found ourselves at the Satellite (then Spaceland) for the Monday night residency. It was Andy’s first night. It was the coolest rock show I’ve seen since living here. Very dangerous. I was immediately intimidated and inspired. (Spencer)
VerBs: “Superhero”
The king of underground LA hustle as far as I’m concerned. We used to play underground art shows in Leimert Park that he’d host when we first moved to LA. Red Beanie, fresh beats. Enough said. (Thomas)
