Track By Track: The Colour Line – The Long Awaited Seal Of Disapproval

Hull’s premiere hardcore mob The Colour Line release their new EP ‘The Long Awaited Seal Of Disapproval’ today on Basick Records – you can check out our review right HERE. We loved it so much we caught up with the guys to find out more about the inspiration behind the tracks, and their process when writing and recording.

“Even though we write very aggressive music and things a little chaotic and wild, we took a conscious decision very early on to just have fun with our track names and make all of the titles as nonsensical as possible” comment the band on the record “However, lyrically, all of our songs are about personal experiences and having to live with yourself after making decisions that affect you or someone close to you. There’s a long standing theme of personal choice and consequence as well as being on the receiving end of those decisions. If you stab someone in the back, you have to live with that choice and the subsequent repentance, but on the other side of the coin, if you’re stabbed in the back you still have to carry on with your life and build yourself back up to be a stronger person too. No-one is perfect, and we try to make our songs mirror that as much as possible.”

E=MC HAMMMERED
This was the first song that we wrote for this EP. We wanted a balls-to-the-wall track to start our set with and we knew this would be perfect. “E=MC Hammered” came about after we were mashing some words together at practice and we thought it had a ring to it so we kept it. This song is definitely one of the most aggressive that we’ve ever written and it also has our favourite song ending too.

USAMA’S BIN LINERS
We just poked fun at our guitarist Usama on this one. We went into a practice and wanted to write just a straight up punk hardcore song and we ended up finishing this song in one jam. We’ve only ever had two songs with ‘actual’ breakdowns and this is one of them, and in a live environment, the ending gets heavier and heavier as it goes on. It’s a lot of fun to play!

R.E.D
We wanted a song title that has a shout-out to our last bassist Josh. When we were looking for a bassist a few years ago, Josh had a red bass, so we used to call him ‘Red Bass Man’ before he joined us full time, which was a nickname we used for him until he left the band. This is definitely the most ‘accessible’ song we’ve ever written. We wanted one that followed a standard pop song structure but a song that we could put our own twist in too. It also hosts a riff that we’ve had in the bank for years but never used so it was nice to finally use it!

THE STREISAND EFFECT
The Streisand Effect is a very real thing and is the name given to the 2003 situation where Barbara Streisand tried to hide and censor photographs of her house from the public, which inadvertently drew a far bigger media attention to the photos than if she had just kept quiet. We thought it was hilarious, so we named a track after the whole state. This is definitely our favourite song on the EP and it ended up being our first release with Basick Records, which we were super happy about. This was another track that we wanted to have pure aggression from the start, and while it’s a pretty chaotic track, it’s still pretty intricate and we’re really stoked with how it came out.

SARCASTRONAUT
This was originally called ‘Sarcastrophe’ and it was supposed to be released around a year and a half ago and we already had a music video filmed, but Slipknot released a song with the same name at the same time so we had to rename the track and push the release back. We ended up re-recording it instead and used it in an EP which worked out a lot better in the end. This is vastly different to anything we’ve done before and we wanted to push the boat out a bit and have one song that goes through multiple genres, that throws the listener in several different directions at the same time. When we first wrote this song, we put a long chorus at the end, and we figured that it’d be a perfect closer for the CD. We’re stoked on how it ended up!
