The art of good parody is a tricky one to get right, but Bosnia and Herzegovina band Dubioza Kolektiv have successfully managed to send up pretty much every aspect of the 21st Century that you can think of in their brilliantly creative new video for ‘Free MP3 (The Pirate Bay Song)’.
Nothing is safe here; Kim Kardashian, Wikileaks, Pirate Bay, The Daily Show, Gangnam Style and even Barack Obama get a fistful of tongue-in-cheek satire from this brilliantly madcap bunch. Splicing a big helping of Eminem’s earworm ‘Without Me’ with a healthy dose of Balkan klezmer, ska, punk, reggae, electronica and hip-hop this one is pretty out there, but you can’t deny it’s nothing if not catchy.
Coming from a country with no music industry, few concerts and no space for cultural or political expression among the new crop of plugged in youth, it’s actually a very poignant political commentary from an entire region that was reeling from deep moral and economic stagnation.
The band comment on the track: “We admire enthusiasts like people from Wikileaks, The Pirate Bay, people like Edward Snowden – who are fighting governments and big corporations – not for profit but because they believe in these ideas, even at the price of their own personal freedoms. It is always inspiring to see people who are finding the way to outsmart the system.”
DUBIOZA KOLEKTIV’s ‘Happy Machine’ album will be released on Feb 5th through Koolarrow Records, the label run by Bill Gould of Faith No More.
