Track of the Day: The Grubby Mitts – Home At Last

The Grubby Mitts are a band from Bedford, UK. Not just any band though; they’re the sort of quintessentially British band that has been hanging on the verge of extinction for many years; that wistful, summery blend of 60s pop, knowing 90s throwbacks such as The Divine Comedy and a flair for experimentation that seems rooted in the tiny oddities of our ingrained culture.

That could all be set to change, however, if debut album What The World Needs Now Is The Grubby Mitts gets the attention it rightly deserves.

Quirky and nostalgic without crossing into twee pastiche territory, this multi-faceted slice of understated beauty walks the line of genius with aplomb. So it should after a mammoth 8 year writing process – that’s a lot of cups of tea and head scratching, even in the leafy suburbs of Bedford.

Lead by acclaimed artist Andy Holden alongside long-term collaborators and friends Johnny Parry, Roger Illingworth, James MacDowell and John Blamey, the band are now in their early thirties, even though they have been playing together in various line-ups since the age of twelve.
