Track of the Day: starling – Misfit

Anna Calvi meets Regina Spektor by way of the downbeat dirges of Martin Grech on this stunning new B-side from starling which pits sparse and melancholy piano against uplifting vocal melody to beautiful effect.

If there was any doubt that the Communion Records newcomer was one to keep an eye on, this should put paid to the rumours. Commenting on the track she says:

“Driven by such a hunger to be understood or accepted that most of my life has meant a kind of compromising. Anything to be loved or liked, leaving myself behind. I wrote ‘Misfit’ in an instance. Guess it was like an emotional sickness, a turning point inside, and I hope that if this sounds familiar to you, that you, like me, will fuck it all off and just be you, no compromise.”

Starling plays Servant’s Jazz Quarters on Thursday 29th October.
