When we found out Iggy Pop was collaborating with Sailor Jerry on a new fashion line, we were left in two minds as to whether this was something to celebrate, or a sad reflection on the demise of punk rock values and the independent spirit that Iggy championed with The Stooges at the start of his career.

To give him his dues, Pop commented in an interview recently that if he had to live off the royalties from his record sales he’d be homeless and unable to pay the bills, something that throws stark light on the struggles of many of the new artists we feature here on Glasswerk who are just starting their careers.

Couple this with Pop’s close relationship with art and fashion through his connections to Andy Warhol and the New York scene in the 60s and 70s and it all becomes a lot easier to swallow. Whether we like it or not, fashion and music are inextricably linked – the iconic image of a shamanistic Iggy Pop writhing barechested, barefoot and clad in skintight Levi’s is an enduring and powerful part of his music, a visceral and masculine image that adds to the ferociousness of his and The Stooges’ output.

Better known for their award winning rum than their clothing line, Sailor Jerry claim Pop shares many of the same values as their brand figure Norman Collins – a renegade tattoo artist who inspired a generation with his unique maritime designs and highly stylised work. Maybe there’s still something to be said for drinking rum, wearing tight denim and having tattoos in today’s ever changing world of music.
