Breakage Featuring Jess Mills – Fighting Fire

Breakage aka James Boyle is perhaps the most prodigious talent in the fast-moving world of British dance music. And while 2010 has been a classic 12 months for the scene, with many exciting producers and artists coming through, it really has been James breakout year. His remixes and solo material have amassed a startling total of 5 Hottest Records In The World on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show. Most notably his minimal and gut-shuddering remix of Clare Macguire’s ‘Ain’t Nobody’ getting played 3 times in a row by the enthusiastic Kiwi.

His sophomore LP ‘Foundation’ featured Skream, Burial, Roots Manuva, David Rodigan, Newham Generals and more, spawned the singles ‘Hard’ and ‘Run Em Out’ to specialist and mainstream acclaim. And as well as the afore-mentioned game-changing rework of Clare Macguire, James stamped his trademark melodic yet minimal sound on remixes of Florence & The Machine, Massive Attack and Plan B.

So it is that ‘Fighting Fire’ drops at a very exciting moment for James. After his slew of successful remixes, his star is shining bright over his South Bank studio, and he felt it was time to put out a piece of 100% Breakage material. And in true Boyle style it’s a track that doesn’t allow itself to be pinned down. Part trance, part progressive house, part dub-step, it’s a track that defies categorization while remaining resolutely Breakage in sound. Featuring the enigmatic vocals of Jess Mills, it’s the magic combination of James’ punchy production and Jess’ cinematic vocal performance which makes the track as powerful on your headphones as it does in the club. Look out for plenty more from these two throughout the year, as James is adding his production to her debut album for Island Records. An exciting prospect indeed.
