Drums of Death returned this summer with his acclaimed debut album Generation Hexed and off the back of its release we now present the first single ‘Won’t Be Long’. Coming close in its four minutes and thirty seconds of blistering acid house, love-lost vocals, tumbling pianos, loose snare fills and rave breakdowns to encapsulating the myriad of ideas that simmer throughout his hugely adventurous debut.
“This is pop music on my terms” declares Drums of Death and with Won’t Be Long having already been picked by Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw as Record Of The Week and championed by Annie Mac and Rob Da Bank it could just be working. Indeed the early reactions to his long-awaited debut would imply that the album of love songs and rave horns that took 18 months to make and which features Gonzales on piano was well worth the wait.
Won’t Be Long dips into the past and reappears with a discriminate grab bag of Chicago House relics and warped Voodoo incantations… or is this simply a man possessed by love?
From pulsing swamp rave to fragile love songs and back again, Generation Hexed is the story of a man divided between the piano and the dancefloor. It therefore comes accompanied by a selection of dancefloor-orientated Dubs of Death that demonstrate his darker side: the roots of London’s clubland whence Drums of Death was borne. Diplo has already snapped up Everything All At Dub for his Mad Decent blog, while Won’t Be Dub appears on this single.
Drums of Death will roam again with his full live band throughout the Winter including a rather apt Hallowe'en special on October 29th:
29th October: Data Transmission Hallowe’en special, Silver Bullet, London
5th November: Greco-Roman, The Social, Paris
11th November: Annie Mac Presents, The Plug, Sheffield
