The Cuban Brothers have managed to turn their tongue in cheek brand of funk laden beats into something a little bit more special on new release ‘Yo Bonita’. Despite gaining notoriety as something of a cabaret comedy act on the festival circuit, The Cuban Brothers’ are serious musicians, first put together by Mike Keat aka Miguel Mantovani when supporting James Brown. There are healthy slabs of funk, soul, hip hop, sweeping cinematic strings, a big-band feel on ‘The Under Dog’ and even a duet with KT Tunstall on ‘We Must Be in Love’.
The chops are tight, the rhymes flow professionally and the groove is heavy on this selection of brand new bangers from TCB, and whilst their roots may be in comedy there’s no denying on this release that they know how to cut a smooth record – this should put a lot of their doubters in their places and also tempt a fair few off the fence and onto the dance floor.
Including guests like Tenor Fly, Omar, Mica Paris, Abdominal and Kurtis Blow this is an album for a hazy Friday night full of cocktails, friends and fun times.
