The Traps – Calypso

The Traps’ new single Calypso is released today on their own Birmingham based indie label, Speech Fewapy Records. It is also the title track from the band’s soon to be released debut album.

Calypso was a nymph in Greek mythology and in Homer’s epic Odyssey poem she captures the hero Odysseus by luring his ship ashore, intending to make him her immortal husband. But it doesn’t work out as she intends. The gods get involved and … well, it’s complicated.

The Traps have taken inspiration from the character from legend and created a lovely upbeat and modern synth driven track. There’s a repeated melody that runs through the song as well as a great guitar hook and strong, even vocals from lead singer Jamie Berry. It’s an engaging song and the repeated chorus is backed by some sparkling guitar work.

Calypso was produced by Rob Jones (aka The Voluntary Butler Scheme) and he has given it a light feel, the individual instruments coming through clearly to back the vocal well in a strong indie-pop sound.

As a single, this is a decent radio and dance floor friendly track. And as a taster for the debut album it is a good indicator that there are big things to come from The Traps.
