SOS – A Challenge To The Dark EP

SOS, the Glasgow rockers previously known as Strawberry Ocean Sea, are a formidable live band. They have past tours supporting the likes of Glasvegas, Mona and Toy under their belt as well as critically acclaimed sets at Rockness and many other venues. Their reputation has grown considerably, and will continue to do so with this debut EP.

Two previously released tracks are contained on the EP along with three other songs including opener Today’s The Day. It’s a stirring start as guitars howl and a rhythmic chant builds on some tremendous drumming. Johnny Skinner’s typically strong Scottish vocals dominate, well backed by strident guitars and layered keyboards. This is SOS at their best: big, bold and anthemic.

The two earlier tracks come next. A Challenge To The Dark is faster in tempo, starting off with a strong bass line before the vocals come in. Again the music is rhythmic and offers a great base for Skinner’s expressive voice to shine. It’s indie rock meets wall of sound and the overall effect is memorable. Carry On Suzie is fast and emotional, a three minute slice of rock with a strong, catchy chorus that can’t fail to get the toes tapping. This is a fine live track and it is to the band’s credit that they have captured the same raw energy in the recorded version.

Under The Moonlight has a slower tempo but is still atmospheric and powerful. It offers something of a break from the unrelenting aural assault of the first three tracks, building steadily to an emotional finish. Hometown closes the EP with a lament for places long gone, a steady drum beat setting the pace. But as well as the regret for the lost past, and indeed for lost youth, there is a forward looking tone and a recognition of the need for progress. The track is lyrically powerful, conjuring up images of graffiti on walls and boys playing football, and also musically stirring.

SOS are clearly a band heading for big things. The five tracks on this EP give a great introduction to their music and a clear indication of their quality. It’s one not to be missed.
