Canterbury – Heavy In The Day

There is a song by Fall Out Boy named “Sophomore Slump Or Comeback Of The Year”, which can be thrown at any band as they release their second album. For Canterbury, this isn’t the case. Their newest record, “Heavy In The Day” is not a sophomore slump. Nor is it a comeback. This is a second helping of quality music.

The album opens with it’s title track, which gets everything going in a much slower pace than we hear during the greater part of the album. But this is instantly picked up in the energetic Something Better, which almost has a punk quality to it.

Gloria, a track which has been around for the best part of 2 years, is an odd addition to the album. But only due to its age, as a song of its magnitude deserves to be on record. It is swiftly followed by the lead single, Ready Yet?, the song made for radio.

Wrapped In Rainbows starts like a clichéd love song, but quickly changes into something far more epic, while She’s A Flame does don the love song cap. Slowly building throughout, it shows that this band are capable of more than songs with loud, infectious chorus’s.

But we are soon back to the Canterbury we all know and love with Saviour, another previously released single. And the final two songs, Garden Grows and Seen It All may be two of the best songs the band have written. Garden Grows has a chorus which will be in your head and ears for too long, while Seen It All closes the album in a similar fashion that the title track opened it. Bringing everything full circle, if you will.

The only flaw I may have with this album is the fact that nearly half of the album was released and available before the album itself. But, when the released songs are of this quality, it’s hard to complain about them being around.

Yes, Canterbury are back with a bang, not that they ever really went anywhere. And did you know that their first album is available as a free download, as it was the day it was released? Well, you do now.

Sophomore slump? Don’t make me laugh.
