Sparrow And The Workshop – Snakes In The Grass

A lightweight Amy Leigh trying to snatch the karaoke mic whilst a The Cranberries song is being attempted, is the disappointing and laboured feel given off in ‘’Snakes In The Grass’. This is delivered by the cosmopolitan troupe, Sparrow and the Workshop. Their debut album of last year has been seen as the modernisation of folk and plenty rests on their second album, ‘Splitting Daggers’ (released 30/5/11 on Distiller Records), to cement that achievement.  
Unfortunately, this single lacks any bite or range, as the cyclical guitars and one dimensional, mid-tempo percussive trot, fails to set things up for the well pitched, hovering delivery of Jill O’Sullivan. It seems as though the song is set up to illuminate the lyrics, but these fail to captivate or even stir. Better is needed, but will no doubt come with the rest of the second album.
