Lotus Mason are a New Zealand indie-rock act who’ve been receiving some good exposure in Australasia, but have previously struggled outside the continent. They’ll be hoping that their new, self-titled album helps them achieve acclaim from further afield, with one track released off the album already doing well in New Zealand and Australia.
The album is experimental at its core, and will not appeal to all. If the first track, “Beso” hints at a psychedelic, relaxed album in prospect – then the second track kicking in with anthemic riffs and an upbeat tempo will make you rethink.
The most promising track on the album (and indeed first single) is “Dream Surreal”. As the name eludes, it’s a mix of echoing vocals, catchy guitars and atmospheric moods that – when combined – form quite a partnership. Whether this – the strongest track on their S/T album, will propel them to overnight stardom; maybe not. Their fan base in England is a sapling compared to their oak tree-like status in their native NZ, however all bands must start somewhere.
Their talent is undeniable – and that, mixed with a heck of a lot of graft, might just see them reach their goal.
