Protest The Hero – Scurrilous

The Canadian progressive metal outfit release their third studio album Scurrilous via Spine Farm Records. Produced by Julius Butty, it was deemed to be their most progressive record yet, and it is certainly just that.

The start of the record fares off well, but admittedly does sound a little repetitive as you reach half way through the album. Despite being a progressive record, the tracks are just too long, which takes away the essence and diminishes the quality of the musicianship because you feel you’ve heard enough after three minutes.

However timings aside, the album is packed full of fast guitar riffs, pounding bass lines and heavy drumming.

The first track and lead single “C’est La Vie” instantly explodes into intricate progressive guitar shredding making a powerful foundation for vocalist Rody Walker to build upon with his distinct vocals, along with showcasing a mix of tempo changes and harmonies.

“Hair Trigger” sounds a little similar musically, though the vocals are delivered with more urgency and emphasis. It includes guest vocals from Jadea Kelly (who has previously worked with the band) and her vocals blend perfectly, really making the song come alive.

There’s no denying that Walker has a huge vocal range but sometimes he needs to tone down more of the higher talkative parts as it sounds whiney rather than adding anything extra to the track.

By “Tandem” it sounds like they’ve found the right balance between the music and the vocals. It expresses a huge sound with lots of intricate parts going on and it shows off Walker’s voice better compared to previous songs.

Tracks like “Tapestry” and “Dunsel,” come across better as they’re fierce and fiery, making them more memorable.

It’s evident that they’re all talented members but feel the way their latest album has been crafted, it detracts you the chance to truly appreciate them.
