Avril Lavigne, since ditching her skate board and Etnies, has tried her hardest to be acknowledged as a real artist. However, she still carries that essence of teenager with every song she brings out. But, Avril has grown up, she’s lived life, got married…. and divorced and we can hear that in her lyrics especially in new single ‘What the Hell’ from forthcoming album Goodbye Lullaby.
She’s not a ‘celeb’ with her life story all over the papers and tends to be quite closed in the public eye, instead her private life comes out in mysterious ways through her music. The new track totally embraces her newly single status and really gives listeners the personal emotion that she’s going through in her break up and the numbness of it all. Many of us can relate to those feelings that you get whilst travelling through a breakup, sometimes not sad but rebellious. It’s quite refreshing to hear a song that, instead of being about the pain, is merely about having fun and the avoidance of it all.
One thing I’ve noticed as we look at Avril’s musical life is that she’s merged to become more mainstream and succomed to the pop music she much detested. I feel the new single sits nicely next to the likes of something Katy Perry or (hate saying it) Kesha might do. The track is upbeat, catchy, quirky and a grower. It also has a resemblence to her previous single ‘Girlfriend’, and I really hope this first single off her fourth album will do equally as well.
Let’s hope theres some more real life lyrics and heartfelt emotions crammed into the entire album.
