Shelter was written by the same scribe as Identity a few years ago. That was a tight little thriller with a few twists along the way that dealt with multiple personality syndrome. Here we have a film dealing with multiple personality syndrome again, in a thriller that has a few twists along the way but is sadly a bit flabby and loose.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers is slowly, and finally, making his way out to a larger audience. Despite a supporting role in the third Mission: Impossible a few years back it hasn’t been until this past year that he has been getting some more prominent roles in mainstream cinema.
Around the same time as Shelter here he co-starred with John Travolta in the actioner “From Paris With love.” It isn’t hard to see why he is being bandied about as the guy has his youthful looks and the acting muscle to back them up. What is a shame though is the materials in which he is given to work with, but then playing a character with multiple personalities could well look very appealing to any actor.
Julianne Moore almost embarrasses herself in the role of one of the dumbest people on the planet. Yes a head doctor that is ultimately a person with issues them self and gets a little bit too involved with their work, dragging their own family into the mess along the way.
The scares are not exactly the most inventive you have seen and rely far too much on loudness to frighten you. The final twist in the closing moments makes you groan loudly and you are left wondering why what could have been a perfectly acceptable psycho-drama had to rely on such cheap antics.
