Fresh Chops: Juan Wauters

Juan Wauters is the kind of guy we like to hear about at Glasswerk – he’s got a story, his art feels real and he’s obviously got a sense of humour too. Landing somewhere between the humble rambling of Bob Dylan, the Brazilian acoustica of Seu Jorge and the American folk of Rodriguez (of Sugarman fame), this latest single ‘Nena’ is a solid introduction to an intriguing new artist.

Moving from his native Uruguay to Queens with his father Alberto in 2000, New York found the father and son pooling their hard-earned factory job wages to bring their family to the borough of opportunity.

Struggling to fit in, Wauters poured his time into songwriting, resulting in his debut solo record, North American Poetry. There’s a hint of the dust bowl about his songwriting that echoes the vast emptiness of the interior of the States – Kerouac, beat poetry, the American Dream – Manifest Destiny lying just out of his clutches.

Juan will be coming to the UK later this month supporting Mac DeMarco, where you can carve out your own little corner of Americana for yourself.
