Fresh Chops: Hawk Eyes

At the risk of sounding like total tossers, we loved Hawk Eyes back when they were Chickenhawk and have been singing their praises for years. With a thriving rock scene propelling artists like Royal Blood and Turbowolf into the limelight, could it now be Hawk Eyes’ turn to shine?

If ever there was a band that deserved to break out after paying their dues, it’s Hawk Eyes, and new single ‘Die Trying’ seems to be a middle finger to giving up that we’re more than happy to support. In the current financial climate, it’s no surprise to see musicians struggling to juggle personal lives, paying the bills and their creativity – with its rallying cry of “I make sounds but there’s no one to make ’em for” this track is a powerful testament to the art of hanging in there in the face of adversity.

Musing on the track’s conception, vocalist and guitarist Paul Astick says “I had severe writers’ block for the duration of this album – sorry Ryan, sorry Rob. To get out of a hole, I went and put myself in one and went to Spurn Point on a really bleak evening. The sea and landscape tells you how to feel. Then my imagination did the work. Not a happy song.

The band have also just announced the release of their new album ‘Everything Is Fine’ for February 2015.
