Everyone’s favourite folk punk hero Frank Turner is lending his support to a campaign to help save local music venues from closure following yesterday’s news that The Cockpit in Leeds was sadly closing it’s doors for the last time.
The former Million Dead front man released the following statement and video on his Facebook page today:
“Long established music venues across the country are under threat as adjacent properties are converted into flats and purchased by people who don’t like live music. Already twelve venues are being threatened with closure under noise abatement notices. More will follow.
There’s a very simple solution and it’s called the Agent of Change principle. Simply put, this means that the responsibility for soundproofing, etc. lies with the newly built apartment block. No longer would it be possible to move next door to a well established music venue and demand they either install (often unaffordable) soundproofing or close down.
Similarly, were a new music venue to open up in a residential area, the owners would be responsible for controlling noise levels. This is such simple common sense it’s surprising the Agent of Change principle isn’t already part of UK law.
Please join me in urging Culture Secretary Sajid Javid to adopt the Agent of Change principle.”
