We got extremely excited about the return of cult heroes R.O.C earlier this month and now we’re incredibly proud to present an exclusive remix of their track ‘I Want You I Miss You I Need You’ by Slangton.
We spoke to Slangton, aka Ben Willmott (also a writer for Mixmag and NME), who told us why he jumped at the chance to remix this track from one of his favourite bands:
“I’d been a massive fan of R.O.C. ever since I heard the first single, ‘Dead Step’, so I jumped at the chance to remix ‘I Want You…’ What struck me about their debut album was how they slipped between different styles and moods so effortlessly, and I was trying to reflect that with this mix, which was originally based on a garage vibe but has strong elements of electro, house, breaks and jungle as well.
The three characters in R.O.C. all have their very distinct musical personalities too, and hopefully I’ve represented them all here. So as well as Karen’s stunning vocal, which obviously is at the forefront here, you get Fred’s lush guitar poking through and Patrick’s evocative, spacious keyboards soaring over the top.
The mix was done at R.O.C.’s studio, which at the time was in Brixton and overlooked the back of Brixton Academy. Quite often the end of the queue for whatever gig was on that night would stretch round the block and we’d have a lot of fun guessing which band was playing judged purely on the fans waiting in line.“
