Ane Brun has confirmed details of a retrospective collection of her work to coincide with the tenth anniversary of her debut album, Spending Time With Morgan. Available as a 2CD set or digital download, the 32 song collection will be released by Brun’s own Balloon Ranger label on June 10, 2013, and will also be available via all good streaming services.
Songs 2003-2013 overflows with some of Brun’s finest recordings, drawing upon work from each of her albums and therefore allowing for both studio and live versions of some of her most popular songs. It also contains a handful of rare tracks, including a gorgeous take on Arcade Fire’s ‘Neighbourhood #1 (Tunnels)’. In addition, new material is present, amongst it a re-recording of ‘This Voice’ that reflects its live arrangement, and ‘Feeling Good’, a cover of the Newley/Bricusse classic made most famous by Nina Simone – and also often sung by Brun’s mother, a jazz singer and pianist in her own right – which is here recast as an acoustic sigh of pastoral optimism. An orchestral interpretation of ‘Don’t Give Up’ (taken from Peter Gabriel’s New Blood album) is also included, Brun taking the previously untouchable Kate Bush role and making it her own.
Ane Brun & Balloon Ranger recordings are also proud to web premiere “ONE” – a short film by Magnus Renfors, based on the music from Ane’s album ‘It All Starts With One’. The groundbreaking film has previously only been shown at film festivals.
Songs 2003-2013 charts Brun’s advance from the bewitching, frail acoustic compositions that made her name to the complex drama of her last album, It All Starts With One, via increasingly adventurous arrangements and an undeniably restless ambition to explore new musical opportunities. A decade in the making, it confirms Ane Brun as an uncompromising and vital musical voice.
“I kind of told myself early on to continue doing this as long as it gave me pleasure,” Brun says, “and it still does, more than ever. I’m still fingerpicking in front of my favourite TV series or with my morning coffee, just like I did ten to fifteen years ago. And it still fascinates me, just like it did when I wrote one of my very first songs, ‘Wooden Body’, sometime around the year 2000…”
