We need to get this out of the way right at the start – based on the strength of this single, Anna Lena is a serious contender for most criminally underrated artist currently residing in the UK.
This captivating and ghostly chunk of piano driven dark-pop is simply bursting at the seams with melodramatic, haunting vocal turns and sparse instrumental sections that fans of Martin Grech and mid-career Radiohead should feel right at home with.
View Of My Sanity left us feeling like we were sinking into a sea of black velvet and gasping for air, with the heavy and oppressive drum beat puncturing the star studded sky of the melodies. At times the crescendo threatens to wash you away on a dreamlike, violent tide of staccato piano, until the gently throbbing guitar drags you back to the beach spluttering to life. Wonderful, majestic and important stuff.
“View Of My Sanity”, from Norwegian songwriter Anna Lena & The Orchids – debut EP, out March 21st.
