Argonaut’s highly anticipated self titled debut album is released by Criminal Records on 19th November. The London 5 piece’s sound combines super sweet sexy vocals with rocktastic guitar riffs, shrill synths and the occasional harmonica for a rock mix with an alternative edge. Influences like Hole, Garbage and Sonic Youth wash through with lead singer Lorna Lyons’s precocious attitude and dirty fuzz and phaser swamped guitar sounds permeating.
The album follows the success of the recent single ‘Touch Electric’ which caused a stir across the blogosphere when it was released earlier this year. New single ‘More Life’ out 26th November has already been championed by BBC 6 Music and received acclaim from NME. The track is based around the repeating situationist slogan ‘I want more life’. “It is originally a quote from Bladerunner” says Lorna “but seemed to sum up everything I felt, especially about being in a band and using music to open doors and live my dreams.”
Argonaut is founded around the husband and wife writing duo of Nathan and Lorna Lyons. “When ARGONAUT began writing songs it was the perfect mission statement, two people feeling trapped in their relationships and day to day lives who wanted to step into a parallel universes” says Lorna. “I was reading and re-reading the Philip Pullman His Dark Materials trilogy at the time, especially The Subtle Knife, and like the book, the lyrics felt very visual and cinematic.” adds Nathan.
Other tracks like ‘They Can Buy You’ and ‘Chemistry’ break up thedriving tormented fuzzy- post-rocky sounds with moments of dirgy downbeat melody with Lorna’s preoccupied vocal echoing almost as if from the bottom of a lake covered in jagged winter frost. With regular shows all over the UK and a recent DJ set at the Kerrang Klub but also performing at The Paralympics this summer, Argonaut look set to bring their edgy grunge rock stylings to wider and wider audiences.
