‘Popup Cinema’ is the new EP from acclaimed British producer Tropics, also known as Chris Ward. Due for release on 5th November via cult label Svetlana Industries, ‘Pop Up Cinema’ follows Tropics’ critically claimed 2011 debut, ‘Parodia Flare’.
Kelpe’s remix of title track ‘Popup Cinema’ presents the original’s vocals as chopped up moments that flicker between soft claps and organ tones, finally leaving room for Ward’s soulful melodies to flood through pulsing synths. Stream and download for free here:
The ‘Popup Cinema’ EP finds Tropics in fine form, retaining the hazy warmth of ‘Parodia Flare’ whilst still moving into new territory. Title track ‘Pop Up Cinema’ is a wistful, slow burning anthem, floating over a soft 4/4 beat, building and collapsing around distorted vocal samples. Written whilst listening to the resurgence of house music earlier this year, Ward says he wanted “to portray that rhythm and culture whilst delivering more stripped back, exposed vocals”.
The EP is rounded off by ‘Invitation’ – a Les Sins-esque ode to the early 80s followed swiftly by ‘Ophelia’, which treads a lo-fi, analogue path towards Daphni territory.
