A week before their long-awaited debut album hits the shelves, This Many Boyfriends will release their new single ‘Number One’ through Angular Recording Corporation on October 1st.
Although it still brims with the jangly guitar-pop warmth that we’ve come to associate with the Leeds-based group, ‘Number One’ takes a more gentle turn, steering listeners away from the near-frantic indie-disco dancefloors that were meant for the likes of ‘Starling’ and ‘(I Should Be A) Communist’ .
Don’t be fooled though, ‘Number One’ is still quintessentially ‘Boyfriends. Rough around the edges and charming with a whistle-worthy melody, the single recently won BBC 6Music’s Rebel Playlist. You can stream it here:
As well as ‘Number One’, This Many Boyfriends’ debut album was recorded and mixed by Ryan Jarman of The Cribs at Edwyn Collins’ West Heath Studios over the course of three intensive weekend sessions. ‘This Many Boyfriends’ is a love letter to their record collections, a tribute to the catchiest and most vibrant moments they could find amongst their most treasured post-punk, C86 and Motown 45s. If the band were looking for a producer to combine their love of sweet melodies with a DIY rough’n’readiness then they were in luck.
“We saw him as a kindred spirit. He liked all the stuff we liked, and he really cared – he took a lot of time and effort over getting it right”, says front man Richard.
There are also many lyrical references to their favourite bands, albums, and songs. “It came naturally to us,” agrees Richard. “We just love other people’s records so much we wanted to get them into our own. It makes more sense to sing about records people know rather than, say, straightforward love songs to some random person.”
This Many Boyfriends, you see, are a rare kind of band. Like the Smiths or Belle and Sebastian, they’re a band that actually mean something. A band that feel like your band. Most importantly, they’re a band you should hold close to your heart … then form your own group and write a song about them, obviously.
