Summer Sundae Weekender are delighted to announce the fourth wave of artists on 2012’s line up, establishing the event once again as an essential date in the summer music calendar.
Soulful and raw, Speech Debelle blew up seemingly out of nowhere and delivered one of the critically acclaimed debuts of the last few years, the 2009 Mercury Prize-winning “Speech Therapy.” Honest, uncompromising and ambitious her 2012 follow up “Freedom of Speech” is a sonic declaration: she’s doing it her way and pushing boundaries at every turn. Agnes Obel debuted as a solo singer with her critically acclaimed album Philharmonics. She plays, sings, records and produces all her material herself and the effect is disarmingly beautiful. When performing her melancholic compositions and dusky near-whispered vocal lie effortlessly over cello, harp and piano vignettes. The outcome is mesmerising proving Agnes to be a master of her unique craft. Deer Tick are five carefree dudes from Rhode Island whose music will rattle your thoughts. Their combination of folk, rock, blues and alt-country has asserted them as musical pioneers and they have gained notoriety for their decadent performances that epitomise authentic rock n’ roll attitude. The Leicester All Ska’s Reggae Big Band will be providing us with a unique and historic performance featuring members of The Paradimes, By the Rivers, Kingsize and El Pussycat! Playing as one 20 piece big band they will perform songs form all four band’s repertoire, also featuring members of The Specials’ brass section. Expect big skanking rhythms, guaranteed hip shaking and foot stomping Ska and Reggae!
Eccentric Londoner Clock Opera aka Guy Connelly manipulates pitches and mangles rhythms whilst whacking wacky selections of metal objects. The resulting songs are beautiful arrangements of masterfully constructed mess. Swedish one-man band Loney Dear aka Emil Svanangen has an organic awe-inspiring sound. It’s hard not to fall in love with his rustic melodies, dreamy instrumentals and gentle alt-folk voice. North Carolina trio Bowerbirds have created an international stir with their under the radar breed of folk song built upon stripped back haunting melodies and honest, earthly lyrics. Human beatboxer and live looper THePETEBOX is known throughout the world as an innovator and accomplished live performer. Molotov Jukebox are a relentlessly fiery London based 6 piece fronted in stunningly flamboyant style by Natalia Tena and have become known for their sweat-filled, dance inducing live shows. Also added to the bill are Leicester locals Jersey Budd and Little Night Terrors and songstress Tiny Ruins.
Joining the BBC Introducing Bill at this year’s Summer Sundae are a number of acts hailing from the East Midlands. Renowned rockers These Furrows, Nottingham youngster Jake Bugg, distinctive talent Mahalia, exciting Jazz infused Indie trio Kenworthy, alternative rockers Buenos Aires, acoustic-pop outfit The Daydream Club’s, infectiously groovy Park Bench Society and finally singer – songwriter with a voice to die for; Nancy Dawkins.
