Ane Brun To Release Deluxe Version Of Album

ANE BRUN has announced details of a 20 track, deluxe version of her recent award winning release, IT ALL STARTS WITH ONE, to be released on April 23rd 2012. Already platinum in Sweden, where BRUN picked up the Best Female Singer/Songwriter Manifest Award (Sweden’s independent equivalent to the Grammies), the album also earned her a second Norwegian Grammy (a ‘Spellemann Prisen’) for Best Female Artist. In addition, BRUN was recently shortlisted for the 2012 Nordic Music Prize, while One, a short film by Magnus Renfors based on four songs from the album, was premiered at the Gothenburg International Film Festival in January.

The additional tracks are further evidence of the captivating power of ANE BRUN’s talent. While many bonus discs feature offcuts and demos, this offers a further ten tracks, forty minutes of music that alone would be worthy of the praise heaped upon the single disc version. In contrast to the more orchestral arrangements there, the extra tracks provide yet more proof of Brun’s determination to explore new musical realms with each release, and – together with the original – represent every song recorded during the album’s studio sessions.

Many of the songs are delicate, piano based compositions that showcase BRUN’s remarkable voice at its most tender, including ‘Dirty Windshield’, ‘One Last Try’, and ‘Another World’ (originally recorded by Antony & The Johnsons, and first performed by BRUN alongside ABBA’s Benny Andersson at 2009’s environmentally themed No More Lullabies concert). Also present is ‘Queen And King’, recorded late at night at a studio party where friends – dubbed the Star Vox Ensemble – lift the song to the heavens with their gospel voices, and a deeply moving cover of Argentine folk legend Ariel Ramirez’s ‘Alfonsina Y El Mar’, a song made famous by Mercedes Sosa that recalls Brun’s early years busking in Barcelona. ‘Take It Slow’, meanwhile, is an intimate, folk-suffused slice of romance, and ‘Du Gråter Så Store Tåra (English Version)’ finds her backed by just an acoustic guitar. A Norwegian version is available on the digital release, as is a cover of ‘Lamento Della Ninfa (Oh Love)’, with English lyrics by BRUN. Completing the package is an extraordinary makeover of Built To Spill’s ‘I Would Hurt A Fly’ (from 1997’s seminal Perfect From Now On album) that sees the original’s intense rock transformed into a heart-rending piano and cello lament.

The ten tracks are a perfect complement to the previously released single disc version of IT ALL STARTS WITH ONE. Produced by her friend Tobias Fröberg, it exhibits a bigger, more atmospheric sound, extravagant arrangements and some of the most immediate melodies of her career. The achingly fragile ‘Oh Love’ and ‘Life Line’ highlight a voice that’s an angelic mixture of Billie Holliday, Beth Gibbons, Ella Fitzgerald and Dolly Parton, while ‘These Days’ sees her accompanied by the soft hum of an organ and the distant roll of drums. Recent single ‘Do You Remember’ is a euphoric, almost tribal track characterised by three drummers and backing vocals from fellow Swedes First Aid Kit, while ‘Undertow’ is a widescreen epic that brings the album to a heartrending climax. José Gonzales also makes a wonderfully understated appearance on ‘Worship’, which is released as a single on April 2nd, while the Middle Eastern influenced ‘One’ was inspired by the events of 2011’s Arab Spring.

Norwegian born, Swedish based ANE BRUN first came to the world’s attention in 2003 with her debut, Spending Time With Morgan. Acclaim has continued to be heaped upon her with each subsequent release, whether studio albums like Changing Of The Seasons – whose string arrangements were provided by Nico Muhly – or live albums, like the two hour Live At Stockholm Concert Hall, which showcase her incessant desire to regularly reinterpret her work. Her profile was further boosted after Peter Gabriel personally chose her to join him on his recent New Blood Tour, where she not only opened the shows but also joined his band, most notably adopting the role of Kate Bush for ‘Don’t Give Up’. IT ALL STARTS WITH ONE is her eighth album.

ANE BRUN performs her two biggest UK and Irish shows to date in April:

· Dublin – Vicars Street – April 27th
· London – Shepherd’s Bush Empire – April 28th

Ane has also confirmed Isle of Wight’s Bestival on 9 September and WOMAD festival.
