Platnum, the former pioneers of the UK Bassline scene, are about to become your new favourite pop group. Having teamed up with producer DJ Poet (of Black Eyed Peas) for their debut album release, the Mancunian trio of Aaron Evers (27) Michelle McKenna (28) and Mina Poli (26) are set to take over the airwaves in 2012 with their unique brand of energetic, soulful dance-pop. The first single from the album, Lost In The Music, will be the DJ Poet produced ‘Solar System’ released by All in Recordings on May 6th 2012
Friends since they were kids, Platnum formed at a talent show in Manchester, (after Aaron and Mina initially entered as a duo and Michelle as a solo rapper). ‘Over the Heartache’ – the huge bass-heavy wobble of a love song that got the newly-formed trio through to the final of the talent show – then went on to become one of the most played Bassline tracks of all time. This early underground success was eclipsed in 2008 when Platnum crashed into the UK singles chart’s top 3 with ‘What’s It Gonna B’ (feat. H “Two” O), scored a top 15 with club classic ‘Love Shy (Thinking About You)’, and embarked on a nationwide tour with N-Dubz.
Fast forward to May 2010 and Michelle – the bands livewire – was on a night out on the town in Manchester, with demos of Platnum’s debut album-in-the making firmly in hand. She gave one demo to a certain Will.I.Am, and later that evening played another to Black Eyed Peas DJ and producer DJ Poet while sat in a car outside a party at their hotel. Poet was sold. Beats were passed back and forth between band and producer in the months that followed before they were able to work together in person. Now, after numerous studio sessions with Poet working on perfecting the Platnum sound, the band are in the final stages of adding the finishing touches to their debut album.
‘Solar System’, the first single to be released from the album, gives an exciting taste of what’s to come, showcasing Platnum’s distinctive fusion of a universal dance sound to their uniquely British core. With its bouncy rush of house-infused synth riffs, spacious beats and uplifting lyrics, ‘Solar System’ is an undeniably infectious, feel-good track made to set alight both dance-floors and radio airwaves alike.
Platnum ‘Solar System’ will be released by All In Recordings on 6th May 2012.
