If you consider yourself an avid fan of music, then you have probably been quite entertained and busy lately. After all, this has been a very busy season in the music world, complete with lots of big news and significant releases, and even one monumental breakup. Here are a few of the top storylines so far from the second half of 2011.
• Just a few weeks ago, Blink-182 made big headlines with the release of their first album since 2003. Entitled Neighborhoods, this is an album that many fans thought would never come. With the members of the band maturing, and moving on to side projects like Angels & Airwaves and +44, it seemed that Blink-182 might be done. Not long ago, however, the band announced its reunion, as well as an upcoming new album. The album is finally here, and for most fans it seems to have been quite satisfying. It’s different, but has many of the classic elements of the band that people have come to love.
• R.E.M. saddened fans worldwide this month by announcing its breakup after literally decades together producing seemingly endless amounts of music. Already, direct tv is showing some of the best R.E.M. concerts as a tribute, and some fans are even going as far as to head to link to buy new flat screen televisions to watch these fantastic shows on. Additionally, a career compilation of best hits is due to hit stores in November, meaning that even as fans lament the loss of one of the truly great bands of our time, there is more to look forward to.
• Kanye West and Jay-Z continue to make headlines as people discover more of the greatness of their joint album Watch The Throne, which came out recently. The album is a bit different, and does not distinctly resemble either artist’s individual style, but there is no denying its steady stream of clever lyrics and catchy beats. After all, who would expect these two to fail to deliver? This is an album worth checking out.
• Finally, one of the musical events that has people most excited this year is the impending release of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto, which, based on leaked previews, as well as the band’s recent EP and single “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall,” promises to offer more of the catchy, almost mystical sounding music we have come to know and love from Coldplay. If this band’s recent history is to give any indication, we will soon be hearing some hits from this album just about nonstop!
