Glasgow's New Music Venue: Stairway

Glasgow’s newest music venue and club, Stairway, opens to the public for the first time tonight. Last night was a special launch event for friends and family – and the odd music journalist got an invite too!

Stairway is based in the heart of Glasgow, on Union Street for those who know the city. Entering from street level you go down the elaborate marble staircase that gives the club its name and into the venue itself, which holds over 200 people.

Black is the main colour downstairs, although an elaborate and expensive looking lighting system composed of fluorescent tubes that change colours means it is not at all gloomy.

In the corner is a decent sized, square stage, lit in the same fashion, with the addition of several spotlights. The sound system is good: I could hear the opening band from the front door. And, despite the few small technical difficulties you expect on a first night, it provided a clear sound all night.

It was a busy night, with several well known faces from the Glasgow music scene in attendance. Three bands played, headlined with a typically dynamic set from the ever excellent The Imagineers. And a good time was had by all.

Owner Ian Wallace and his team have done a fine job in fitting out Stairway. They already have a number of gigs and club nights with top djs planned, and I’m looking forward to returning to the club soon.

Stairway joins the list of impressive music venues in Glasgow, and it will add a new option for the many fine bands around the city.
