Chicago husband and wife duo My Gold Mask are causing waves in the States right now. Their brand of lo-fi indie-pop is catchy, accessible and – perhaps most importantly – extremely 'now'.
Whilst the tag 'pop' brings with it not altogether positive connotations, I mean it in the best possible way; the songs this duo churn out are catchy beyond belief. A thousand genres are audible in there, compressed to form a sound that gets your toe tapping.
Drummer/vocalist Gretta Rochelle and Guitarist Jack Armondo met by chance at a rooftop party, with a strong musical partnership forming immediately. Time expanded this relationship into the married couple they are today – and it's that bond which serves as the foundation for My Gold Mask.
“When we’re writing songs, Jack doesn't have to finish an idea before I get what he's doing, and vice versa,” says Gretta. “We know what each other are thinking – it could be a small look, a chord progression, or a shared joke, that takes a song into a new direction.”
With a bit of luck, the pair are heading to the UK this year for shows. You can check out some choice snippets from their EP A Thousand Voices above – if you like what you hear, more information can be found by following this link.
