As anticipation builds for the Shockwaves NME Awards 2011, NME is proud to announce that current Shooting Stars score-keeper and resident mobile catering expert, Angelos Epithemiou, will take on the prestigious role as host for this year’s awards, at the iconic O2 Academy Brixton on Wednesday February 23rd.
Plucked from obscurity by Bob Mortimer, who presented him with an award for Mobile Caterer of the Year, Angelos is a Perrier Award nominated comedian who was thrust into the public eye as a permanent member of Ulrika Johnson’s team on Shooting Stars before graduating to the position of score-keeper for the latest series of the show. His recent country-wide solo tour was a sell-out, garnering high praise from critics and audiences alike.
Taking time out from his UK tour with his show 'Angelos and Friends', Angelos Epithemiou said: “This is getting ridiculous, I got to do these NME awards now. It doesn't really fit in with my schedule either coz I usually go out on the night they're doing these awards to see my mate Barry who's in hospital coz he's gone round the twist, but I said I'll do it and go and see Barry on the next night instead. I hope he understands, I think he will, he's only really in the hospital for flashing, he gets carried away you see.”
2011’s ceremony will be opened by US rockers My Chemical Romance who are nominated for four awards and will be closed by Foo Fighters, fronted by the NME Godlike Genius, Dave Grohl. Also giving an exclusive live performance will be winner of the Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution to Music award, PJ Harvey.
With more special guest acts to be announced, the Shockwaves NME Awards 2011 are sure to be the hottest ticket in town. To check the availability of tickets for the event visit nme.com/tickets.
