In 2010 Springfestival celebrated its momentous 10th anniversary, featuring an array of richly diverse live and DJ talent from across the globe including Zoot Woman, Zombie Nation and Erol Alkan, for what was the festival’s best year to date. Thousands of people from all over Europe flocked to Austria to enjoy the splendour of an enchanting city whilst experiencing some of the world’s leading performers and musicians performing day and night.
2011 witnesses the 11th instalment of one of Europe’s most intriguing festival propositions returning across 1st-5th June, set in the beautiful and enchanting UNESCO World Heritage city of Graz. Alongside hosting its finest underground clubs, Springfestival boasts some truly breathtaking locations; a cave, nay a dome carved in the middle of a mountain, a spectacular fortress, a man-made steel and glass river island, and the “Friendly Alien” Museum of Modern Art are spectacular backdrops making for a unique audio-visual experience, combining four days and nights of amazing music, workshops and stimulation. The locations are scattered around the city centre, all within walking distance or catered for by a shuttle bus.
The first wave of the lineup for 2011 will be announced toward the end of January.
Graz is a stunning city in south-east Austria, awarded with the UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999 which was renewed in 2010, along with European Capital of Culture status in 2003. It features architectural wonders originating from the Germanic region, the Balkans and the Mediterranean, for which it served as a crossroads for centuries. Being situated in the cultural borderland between Central Europe, Italy and the Balkan States, Graz absorbed various influences from the neighbouring regions and thus received its exceptional townscape. Today the old town consists of over 1000 buildings, their age ranging from Gothic to Contemporary.
In the last few years some ground breaking modern new public buildings have been erected in the city. The most famous of these include the Kunsthaus (house of modern art) and the “Murinsel” (island in the Mur), an island made of steel, situated in the river.
Graz is a warren of winding streets and passages, and wide cobbled plazas; a cosmopolitan café culture resides along with boutique shops, hip hotels and access to a beautiful region of Europe.
