The Futureheads Think Christmas Was Better In The 80s

The Futureheads release their new single, ‘Christmas Was Better In The 80s’ on the 19th December 2010 through Nul Records, as part of their 10th birthday celebrations.

It has been a reliably explosive return for The Futureheads in 2010 with a near perfect critical response to their last album ‘The Chaos’, independently released through their own Nul Records label in April. Having introduced their return at the turn of the year with the Radio 1 A-Listed single, ‘Heartbeat Song’, it heralded yet another fine chapter of this ongoing magical Mackem story.

The Futureheads have spent most of 2010 on the road. There were American tours of the east and west coasts, a whistle-stop gig in Dubai, a string of European festival dates and a fully sold-out, rapturously received British tour. They are currently wrapping up a European tour that will culminate in a string of UK dates with Biffy Clyro and headlining their own Futurefest 2 on 23rd December at Newcastle Academy. The line up of Futurefest 2 will feature a handpicked selection of the best bands of the Northeast to help the Futureheads celebrate 10 years since their first gig, back in December 2000!

To celebrate their 10th birthday The Futureheads have also collaborated with iconic artists including David Shrigley and Stuart Semple to create a series of limited edition prints, raising money for Newcastle based charities with all of the artists generously giving their time for free. For the ‘FH10’ project the band sent each one of the artists an album, and asked them to respond to its music as if creating the album cover for the first ever time.

‘Christmas Was Better In The 80s’ is an anarchic Christmas ditty featuring the four piece’s trademark four-part harmonies and a wanton heavyweight chorus. Fronted by the thunderous, eccentric spirit of Barry Hyde this track tears through rockier riffs yet never relents on their favoured pop note.

As a British guitar band carrying a very raw and energised message, and as a British guitar band that continually writes catchy rock songs that unite a broad audience, The Futureheads are the type of band that are few and far between. They’ve been ticking all the right boxes since 2000, and where the rough aesthetics of DIY meets the mainstream, The Futureheads are all but a national treasure.
