The cream of UK talent swept the board at this year’s MOBO Awards in association with Lebara Mobile, held last night inside the boiling Echo Arena, Liverpool. With all categories voted for by the public on mobo.com, the star-studded ceremony saw homegrown talent Tinie Tempah and JLS as this year’s biggest winning acts, walking away with two gongs each.
The past 15 years of MOBO Awards have celebrated and embodied urban music and in a year where MOBO artists have accounted for two thirds of the No.1 spots in the single charts, this year’s ceremony has proved that British is best.
This year’s awards marked the explosion of the UK’s very own Tinie Tempah. Making his MOBO debut with a staggering four nominations, the South London rapper took home the prestigious Best Newcomer award and Best Video in association with MTV BASE for his number 1 smash Frisky.
The UK’s favourite boyband, and last year’s winners JLS scooped Best UK Act in association with Lebara Mobile and the Best Album award, with the boys also stealing the show with their surprise collaboration of the evening with US star Travie McCoy.
Hosted by Radio 1’s Reggie Yates and UK songstress Alesha Dixon with N-Dubz hosting backstage in Liverpool, this year’s show saw other phenomenal performances from the crème de la crème of the UK’s finest musical talent from N Dubz, Roll Deep, Mark Ronson and Tinchy Stryder’s show stopping finale featuring Tinie Tempah, Devlin and Giggs.
Along with his stellar performance on the night, Professor Green proved his worth this year picking up Best UK Hip Hop / Grime, while Best UK R&B / Soul Act went to Plan B.
This year MOBO also paid tribute awarding the Lifetime Achievement Award to Billy Ocean for over 30 years in the business.
For only the second time in MOBO history, the show ventured outside of its native London, to expand the MOBO family to another city with a great musical heritage, to the banks of the Mersey, home of The Beatles, Liverpool.
With Liverpool bursting with some great TV, music and football talent, the Echo Arena has proved to be more than welcoming to the up and coming stars of the future at this year’s MOBO Awards.
