After the simply riotous 8th birthday celebrations at the end of September which saw Circus’ triumphant return to Liverpool after a summer hiatus, there follows a stunning run of three parties to complete 2010. Starting with the annual Halloween fancy dress bash at the end of October, followed by Circus and Chibuku presents Cocoon at Nation on Fri 26th Nov, and to bow out of this scintillating year, a Mon 27th Dec special back at The Masque, Circus’ resident and founder, Yousef, has assembled some of the strongest lineups the club has ever seen.
Yousef explains that, “I am unfortunately away for the Halloween party and want to leave the club and Liverpool in some very capable hands, and I feel the lineup really reflects this. It’s another really big show for us, plus there’s plenty more to come in November and December too.”
The Theatre unities two Circus favourites who come with huge pedigrees. From his early hiphop and rapping roots supporting Ice Cube, Jamiroquai and Snoop Dog, Locodice’s real reputation has been carved out of the noughties. The foundations of his second career were forged at his ten-year residency at Tribehouse in his home town of Düsseldorf, followed by an Ibiza DC-10 residency for four years and producer on seminal labels including Ovum, M_nus, Cadenza, Cocoon and Four Twenty. His association with Circus stretches back to 2004 and Locodice has remained the revered DJ everyone wants back since then. Expect elements of his unique tribal, bass-driven sounds.
Change has been a constant theme throughout the successful career of Green Velvet, but as he has crossed genres and experimented with his sound, the common thread running through the music he has made for nearly two decades is its roots in and dedication to the Chicago House sound. As Cajmere and later Green Velvet, he is regularly cited as one of techno’s luminaries and architect of seminal tracks including La La Land and Flash/Answering Machine. The third act of The Theatre is a Circus fave: Tim Green. He’s a DJ who Circus have regularly championed and one who has built up a loyal following with the Liverpool crowd since his debut in 2008. Probably widely known in 2010 for his Cassius remix of 1999, the Brit-born star has risen through the ranks in a short space of time with plaudits coming in from Sven Vath, Pete Tong, Ritchie Hawtin, Carl Cox and John Digweed for his productions and remixes. Circus resident and Ibiza Mambo resident Alex Wolfenden is back too.
Up in The Loft, Saved’s founder Nic Fanciulli headlines. During his time traversing the globe he’s notched up a residency at Space Miami, the Ibiza counterpart’s Terrace as well as honing his own Club Class sessions around the UK. Nic released many tracks through Skylark, Buick Project and Renaissance, and his own Saved label has fronted tracks from Zoo Brazil, Paolo Mojo and Audiofly with remixes from the likes of Alex Smoke and Paul Woolford. His own album, I-Panik, achieved wide acclaim.
Nic’s supported by Nick Curly, originally feted as one of the driving forces behind the Mannheim techno and deep house sound, who has now evolved to the tougher end of tech-house. Another spinner from the stable of fine German deck technicians, Nick’s sublime releases on Cecille, including ‘Stuntman’ and ‘Dubnoise’, helped to cement his reputation after his early work on murmur, Supernature, 8 bit and Plastic City garnered initial attention. Support comes from Circus’ own young star, Lewis Boardman.
Finally in Ink, Circus welcome back old friends Uber from Carlisle, where they continue to light up town with a string of amazing bookings including everyone from Pete Tong to Danny Rampling. Taking over Ink for the night, they bring in Jesse Rose, widely regarded as one of the most forward-thinking house music producers of the past ten years and someone who is responsible for twisting the template of house music as it is known. He’s recently been performing live alongside Henrik Schwarz as Black Rose and his work on some major label collaborations the rest of 2010 will see Jesse continuing his skewed take on music.
Uber’s own trio of deck delight comes in the form of their main resident and ace house DJ, Ki Creighton, along with Peter Thompson and Lee Clark.
