Ali Love has already tossed two very potent musical grenades into the pop battlefield with his tastemaker singles “Diminishing Returns” and “Love Harder” last year – glittering, diamond-cut gems of dark disco pop streaked with sex and glamour – but that is nothing compared to what he has in store next. For his new single “Smoke and Mirrors” is quite possibly the most infectious, most accomplished track he has to date, and signals the long overdue arrival of a major new star in the pop firmament.
Ahead of his long awaited debut album “Love Harder”, due in August, “Smoke and Mirrors” is a delirious, deliciously debauched slice of whirling nu-disco, influenced as much by the vintage keyboards and glowing guitar lines of classic electro pop as it is by the exigencies of today’s dancefloor – it is an urgent, pumping call to arms on the disco, a shot of adrenaline straight to your heart, and, above all, a stone cold instant classic unlike anything else. And, with throbbing remixes by Villa, Bottin and Funtcase under its belt, it also looks set to be responsible for hundreds of thousands of dancefloors being demolished the world over this coming summer.
Of course, there’s no question that he will be front and centre these coming months. Already he’s a fixture in the pop landscape, what with, his interim single “Love in Darkness” shooting to number 17 on the Main Chart, no. 6 on the Electronic Chart and no. 1 on the Alternative chart upon release on the “We Are Hunted” website, “Diminishing Returns” ranked as one of the most blogged tracks on Hype Machine last year, making Popjustice’s roundup of the best singles of 2009, and even soundtracking a “Skins” advertisement. With a spate of shows coming up as well as his debut album, he is ready to make the leap into the big time. Forget the summer of love, 2010 will see the summer of Ali Love.
