Ibiza and Mallorca Rocks Open In Style

The Balearic Islands have never seen a party like it. Mallorca and Ibiza Rocks kicked off a summer long celebration of live music this week with two explosive opening nights that featured an impressive list of artists including Biffy Clyro, The Kooks, Zane Lowe and Bombay Bicycle Club.

Ibiza Rocks proved yet again why it has become one of the must-experience music destinations of the summer season. Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro had the honour of headlining last night’s opening party, flaunting their distinctive melodic grandeur in a blazing performance. Playing a 14-song set including ‘Saturday Superhouse’, ‘Mountains’ and ‘The Captain’, the three piece nailed experimental guitar riffs and majestic choruses. To signify the end of the performance, Biffy Clyro triumphantly dived into the Ibiza Rocks swimming pool as the thumping audience cheered on.

Meanwhile Mallorca Rocks celebrated its inauguration on Sunday with mind-blowing sold-out performances from The Kooks and Zane Lowe. Situated in the very heart of Maguluf, the massive 12 building hotel burst as the crowd was treated to some of the best live performances ever to grace the island.

It was a momentous performance for The Kooks who were one of the first bands to play Ibiza Rocks back in 2005. Playing an epic set which lasted almost two hours, they played a mix of old hits and new tracks including ‘She Moves in Her Own Way’ and ‘Naïve’. Thunderous cheers from the crowd of over 2000 penetrated the courtyard stage as frontman Luke Pritchard jumped around the stage with the infectious energy that has become synonymous with the group. The Kooks will be making a return to the island to headline Ibiza Rocks on 10 August.

It seemed only fitting that master of new music and Rado 1 DJ Zane Lowe also christened Mallorca’s newest, biggest and best party pad. Zane, who played an imperative role in persuading the bands to play Ibiza Rocks, back when it all began in 2005, has become a special member of the ‘Rocks’ family, sharing hosting duties and playing special guest DJ sets every year since. The New Zealander showcased his legendary DJ skills with a pumping mix of hip hop, R&B pop and dance.

It was a massive week for supporting act Bombay Bicycle Club who supported at both hot spots Mallorca and Ibiza Rocks. The boys from North London, who recently picked up the gong for Best New Band at the NME Awards 2010, proved they are truly a force to be reckoned on the music scene, as they performed smashing sets with songs from their debut album ‘I had the Blues but Shook Them Loose’. Opening Ibiza Rocks last night, the boys were even joined by eight Playboy bunnies onstage to dance along to ‘Always Like This’, much to the enjoyment of the band and crowd alike.

Ibiza Rocks will continue next Tuesday 15 June with killer performances by Detroit Social Club and Ian Brown. Mallorca Rocks will enjoy its second sizzling night on 5 July with Tinie Tempah and Calvin Harris.
