Malpas and Jo Rose To Support Chew Lips For Topman CTRL Live

Hotly tipped acts Malpas and Jo Rose are set to support Chew Lips for CTRL Live on 9th June. After finally beating the Volcanic dust cloud, headliners Chew Lips have made it to the UK and will be bringing their electronic casiotone beats to the Cardiff Arts Institute and promise to be well worth the wait! After taking to the helm of Topman CTRL last month, the band are fulfilling their last duty as Controllers and plan to end on a high!

To get themselves warmed up ahead of the gig, the band will also be taking to the decks for a special DJ set from 3-5pm at Topman, Queen Street, Cardiff.

The London based trio have fast established themselves as a band with brilliantly contrary characteristics – with their minimal beats on debut album Unicorn, showcasing pop music with a complex and colourful DNA. The BBC said of the album, “Unicorn is that rarest of things: a record imbued with genuine talent and emotion which wipes the floor with the majority of its makers’ contemporaries…quite startling.” After spending the whole of 2009 in a whirl of hype, Chew Lips are claiming their place as bona fide pop stars this year.

Last year Ali M Forbes wrote and recorded a bunch of scratchy demos in a garret in Kings Heath using a variety of knackered old instruments he'd bought off eBay and a laptop. He teamed up with producer maverick Andy Savours in a garret in Brixton and together they honed these rough gems into electro-folk masterpieces and Malpas was born. Joined by fellow adventurer Jim on samples / kit, and synthesist-who-doesn't-own-a-synth Tim. All they lacked was a glockenspiel player. Unfortunately they couldn't find one so they got the next best thing in gin-swigging, piano-toting queen of the party Miss Perry. A little red van and a massive red soundman were the final pieces of the puzzle. They now roam the country as soldiers of musical fortune!

Jo Rose is a singer songwriter with just a hint of the wistful Americana that makes the likes of Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes and Elliot Smith such an appealing proposition…except he's not from some windswept American backwater, he's from Manchester. Expect him to be the subtly undulating Yin to the Chew Lips' defiant Yang.
