One of this year’s most exciting new bands The Asteroids Galaxy Tour will release their brilliant debut album ‘Fruit’ on 21st Seotember 2009. It’s a perfect pocket of psychedelic pop pleasure packed full of catchy, funky gems and soulful gorgeous ballads, sung by the stunning Mette Lindberg whose kooky, compelling vocals further enhance the band’s unique sound. All are accompanied by a horn section that pays homage to the sixties soul maestros of Motown that inspired the band and which features ace trumpet player Miloud Carl Sabri who spent time in Cuba in 1999 playing with the mighty Buena Vista Social Club.
From the opener, the deliciously dusty and soulful ‘Lady Jesus’, based on the true story of a scary Danish religious leader to the utterly infectious closer ‘Bad Fever’, there is not a dull moment to be had. Their debut single ‘The Sun Ain’t Shining No More’ is a kaleidoscopic epic of a song that demands you shake your hips on the very first listen. And you’ve probably heard the blissed out pop of ‘Around The Bend’ on the Ipod Touch ad. The dreamy ‘Crazy’ takes the tempo down a notch while future single ‘The Golden Age’ is catchy as hell and will take up residency in your head after the first listen. An aural feast indeed.
What the songs have in common is a sense of adventure and a feeling of
freedom you rarely find in pop music anymore. The sounds of different
decades rub shoulders as though they have always partied together and there
is a genuine warmth that comes partly from friends making music purely for
the love of it and partly from founder Lars Iversen’s vintage recording equipment.
Formed eighteen months ago, the band are heading for fame at a speed even they didn’t expect. Their debut gig saw them support Amy Winehouse at the biggest venue in their native Copenhagen. Soon after, a demo found its way to London and within days the band were offered a management deal, such was its impact.
Since their first single release in the summer the band have been making big waves. Coming on like a modern day B 52’s, they have played gigs and festivals in Europe, the States and the UK to rapturous response, garnered strong support from radio including Radio 1’s Jo Whiley and Sara Cox and Radio 2’s Jonathan Ross, Dermot O’Leary and Radcliffe and Maconie. Mette has appeared on ‘Never Mind The Buzzcocks’ and the band recently recorded an exclusive live session in New York for iTunes which is now available throughout iTunes stores. They will also be playing at the SXSW festival in March next year.
The bandy have also staunch fans in high places and this has lead to the Ipod Touch ad and an offer to appear in the brilliant US teen drama Gossip Girl.
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour star looks set to soar. Watch this space.
