You Me At Six’s emergence is a DIY punk dream come true: one unsigned suburban rock outfit – zapped through with sinewy guitar riffs and can’t-get-you-out-of-my-head harmonies – are suddenly rocket launched from Surrey’s suburban toilet circuit into the festival big time and onto Radio One’s playlist with only a MySpace fan page to light the fuel. Along the way, the five piece – lead singer Josh Franceschi, guitarists Max Heyler and Chris Miller, drummer Dan Flint and bassist, Matt Barnes – amass a fan base of thousands. They score upwards of two million hits on YouTube for the homemade video to 2007 single, Save It For The Bedroom and support the likes of arena big hitters, Fall Out Boy and Fightstar.
If this sounds like a flight of fantasy, then it’s about to get weirder still. Franceschi and co. are nominated for the position of 2007’s Best New Band and Best British Band of 2008 at the Kerrang! Awards. They play the prestigious Give It A Name tour. Scarily, all of this is achieved with only a smattering of self-taught business savvy to call upon. There are no major label deals to grease the wheels; no rock impresarios to kick down doors. By anyone’s standards, it’s quite the word of mouth phenomenon.
YMAS’s effervescent spirit kick-started a domino effect: support slots were falling at their feet; they quickly recorded a handful of tracks to build on the buzz. A 2007 single, Save It For The Bedroom drew admiring glances and was matched by a string of explosive live shows, including a headliner at the Astoria. The band released a full-length album in 2008 called Take Off Your Colours on indie label, Slam Dunk Records which debuted at no. 25 in the UK charts.
In 2009 You Me At Six show no signs of slowing down their dizzy ascent. Having played their biggest, sold out UK tour to date they won over new audiences at this year’s South By Southwest, Download, T in The Park and Oxegen festivals with their charged live performance. A return to the studio produced two new singles; the insanely catchy radio hit Finders Keepers and new single Kiss And Tell, a sing along anthem in the making.
The band are now set to release a special deluxe edition of Take Off Your Colours on September 14th. It comprises two discs; the first disc with the original thirteen album tracks and the second featuring five new songs, including Finders Keepers and Kiss And Tell and the videos for both of these singles. It will be available on CD and digital download.
New single Kiss And Tell will be released on September 7th and available on CD, 7” and digital download.
You Me At Six headline a Kerrang! show at The Forum on 28th July before joining the Warped Tour across the States in August. They return to play Reading and Leeds. Their second full-length studio album will be released in early 2010.
