Ten City Nation’s second album ‘At The Still Point’ see’s them step up a level from last year’s debut outing, their new recordings delve further into the darkness: showcasing a powerhouse melodic rock sound that’s been built on years of hard work, that’s included the release of an acclaimed debut long player last year and live appearances alongside fellow left field acts We Start Fires, Untitled Musical Project and Popular Workshop, Wire, Future Of The Left and Blood Red Shoes.

Bucking the current trends for vacuous art pop and derivative electro, ‘At The Still Point’ manages to bottle the dark intensity of the Ten City Nation live shows and unleashes it upon open ears and hearts. Opening with the brutal double salvo of ‘Flashing Lights’ and ‘Silent Disco’ (both appear on a split single 7’ and download through R*E*P*E*A*T Records) ‘Flashing Lights’ is a master class in alt rock dynamics: thudding bass, cascading power chords, haunting vox, charging headlong down midnight highways; while the punky hollering and furious riffing of ‘Silent Disco’ are addictive: the thunderous drumming of it’s outro bringing to mind the work of Nirvana

‘At The Still Point’ is a personal record thus running through its heart are moments of genuine melancholia, the atmospheric guitar interplay and plaintive melody of ‘Take Me Down’ stares into the depths of the bottom of a glass then regains its balance, reassuring you that it’s “gonna be alright.” ‘J.L. Give It Up’ is another highlight: sublime vocal and instrumental interplay that ebbs and flows from calm reflection to defiance and back again. Meanwhile the title track and ‘Ten Years Older’ ache with wistful regret, building to crashing crescendos worthy of the best moments of My Vitriol.

But make no mistake: like major influences Future Of The Left’s latest album, ‘At The Still Point’ is a punk rock record that packs a punch. ‘A Butcher In Silks’ subverts the bassline from Love Buzz by Nirvana in its stripped back verse and spits it back out into a unstoppable chorus. The pummelling rhythms and chanted refrains of ‘Black Tie White Soul’ stomp on your neck, while the distorted sneer of ‘Snakebite Blues’ is reminiscent of early Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

‘At The Still Point’ depicts a band demanding to be heard, and with a huge touring schedule that will see them travel across this fair isles, 2009 might just be the year that sees you unable to resist the conviction of Ten City Nation.
