2009 has undoubtedly been the year of Elbow’s lives. Riding high at the start of the year having secured the Mercury Music Prize, the triple follow up of the South Bank Show Award for Best Album, a NME Award for Outstanding Contribution To British Music and the BRIT for Best British Band catapulted the band firmly into the mainstream media limelight and saw them play a sold out Wembley Arena show, their largest to date. Now, that milestone is to be surpassed with the final show of 2009 for the lads as they come home to Manchester’s MEN Arena on Friday September 18th for what is sure to be an emotional and uplifting last waltz for ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’.
The year since the release of ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ has seen Elbow stretch themselves as never before in the live arena. From their acclaimed set as part of Meltdown at the Royal Festival Hall, through the Wembley show to the two forthcoming sold out shows with the Halle orchestra, the fastest selling event ever at the Manchester International Festival, the band have striven to make live performances unique and compelling and this final show will be no exception.
The show will be the Northern counterpart to March’s Wembley extravaganza which saw critics united in praise for the band. The production for the show will once again involve Manchester’s visual arts magicians and long term Elbow collaborators The Soup Collective and will be a fitting send off for a much loved record.
Elbow frontman Guy Garvey, is looking forward to one more UK show:
‘It’s been a brilliant couple of years if, at times, a bit frantic and occasionally bizarre. To finish with a home town show is the perfect end to a perfect year’
Following the show Elbow will return to the studio to work on their fifth studio album.
Tickets go on sale on Friday 1st May at 9am priced £25 (subject to booking fee) and are available via link or on 08712200260.
