Chas Cole, CMP Entertainment said “2009 is a very exciting year for the Liverpool Summer Pops, as we are rebranding as a festival. After eight successful years it’s been an incredible journey taking us from the big top to the arena but this year we plan to broaden the appeal of the Pops.
By also hosting fringe events throughout the month of July, we want to bring together different venues in the City and put on shows of different genres at places like, The Philharmonic, The Empire and The 02 Academy. We won’t be bringing just the big names to the Summer Pops Festival, we want to work from grass roots, with new home grown and international talent.
We want to reinforce Liverpool’s title as a music city in July, just as Edinburgh is synonymous with it’s own festival in August.
We feel it’s important to build on the momentum from last year’s Capital of Culture, especially at a time when there is a feeling of an anti climax and the credit crunch. The Festival will encourage people to stay in the City and encourage visitors to come to Liverpool throughout July. The Liverpool Summer Pops Festival will become an event that encompasses rock, pop, blues, country and classical and not forgetting the yearly charity event, Beatles Day. In essence continuing the Capital of Culture theme of the music world in one City.”
The first Echo Arena Summer Pops Festival shows to be announced are, The Australian Pink Floyd Show, Jools Holland, Simply Red and Deacon Blue, all firm Pops favourites over the years. The first fringe show to be announced is The Lotus Eaters at The Philharmonic on Saturday 25th July.
THE AUSTRALIAN PINK FLOYD SHOW, are set to make Pop’s history, with their eighth Pops year in a row, with two very special Liverpool shows; The Wall on Friday 3rd July and Saturday 1st August.
For the first time in over 25 Years, they perform Pink Floyd's legendary rock opera ‘THE WALL’ live in concert and in its entirety on both nights.
The show includes an amazing new stage production and will include new animation, lasers & inflatables, plus a very special 'greatest hits' encore. The band have also promising a special Liverpool only surprise for these two shows.
“We always love coming to Liverpool, there is always a party atmosphere to our shows and Liverpool feels like a second home to us now. Expect a few extra surprises just for you guys” said singer/bass player Colin Wilson, currently on tour in Europe.
BEATLES DAY – THE CONCERT, returns on Friday 10th July. Following on from the success of last year’ s inaugural charity event, Beatles Day. The climax of the day will once again be the Beatles Day Concert, as a host of stars perform Beatles songs. Further details of this year’s Beatles Day events and performers for the concert will be revealed over the forthcoming weeks.
The UK’s most popular pianist and bandleader, JOOLS HOLLAND AND HIS RHYTHM AND BLUES ORCHESTRA, will headline a very special Liverpool show on Friday 24th July 2008. Special guests include the legendary guitarist Dave Edmunds.
Jools Holland, OBE, has performed and recorded with some of the most talented musicians and songwriters in the world, including Eric Clapton, the late George Harrison and Luther Vandross, Sting, BB King and Paul Weller.
“It wouldn’t be summer without a visit to the Summer Pops, myself and the band can’t wait to be back in Liverpool.” Said Jools Holland.
SIMPLY RED, bring their greatest hits tour to the Pops on Saturday 25th July.
This year Mick Hucknall celebrates 25 years of unbroken service with the band he founded, fronted and named. Simply Red emerged out of the streets and clubs of Manchester in the post-punk era of 1984 and within 12 months were riding in the British charts.
Their phenomenal career has spanned three decades; they’ve released 10 studio albums racking up over fifty million global sales, notched up over 30 top 40 UK singles, won countless awards including 3 Brits, 2 Ivor Novellos and a Mobo Special Achievement. They gained the rarest prize for a British artist with not just one, but two number one hits in the USA; the album ‘Stars’ was the biggest selling album in the UK for two consecutive years and they have played more than 1000 live shows to over 10 million people.
Liverpool band, THE LOTUS EATERS, soared into the UK top twenty in 1983 with ‘The First Picture Of You’, a song that remains synonymous with British summertime.
They perform at The Liverpool Philharmonic Hall for the first time since their sold out show in 1984, in support of the miners’ struggle. This will be a special night in which The Lotus Eaters reinvent the songs from their cult album No Sense Of Sin and perform compositions from their new album, A Plug-in Called Nostalgia. The band are accompanied by a string section and projected photographic and moving images, revivifying the past and reprising influences that inform their work.
DEACON BLUE, have announced their fourth consecutive Pops show on Friday 31st July. Underlining the affinity the band has with this City and their Scouse fans, singer-songwriter, Ricky Ross said “It’s no secret we always love playing Liverpool, the spirit and loyalty of our fans here never fails to amaze us. Liverpool will always have a special place in our hearts ”
Deacon Blue are one of the most commercially successful British bands of the time, with 18 UK Top 40 hit singles and 5 Top 5 UK albums, 2 of which were No 1 albums. Deacon Blue first stormed the charts back in 1988 with the single, ‘Dignity.’ Other hits include ‘Real Gone Kid’ and ‘Chocolate Girl’. Whilst their 2005 “Singles” album hit the Top 20.
Tickets for the above shows will go on sale on FRIDAY 13th JULY at 9am.
